The Amazon store is a major win for many digital media heads, a win for innovation and choice :) and a nice addition to eMusic, already the second largest store and 100% MP3.
But I'm confused by your comment. When you say "itunes plug-in" do you mean a Firefox add-on specific to the Amazon MP3 store? Or perhaps an AppleScript on OS X?
Recall that iTunes doesn't support plug-ins to other stores. Or subscription services. Or radio services. Or video services. Or social networking services that incorporates music, video, movies, etc. Or recommendation services. Or locker services. Etc.
Moreover, iTunes doesn't support your non-Apple mobile handset. Or your non-Apple portable MP3 player. Or your non-Apple home LAN setup. Or run on Linux.
These are some of the reasons for and needs met by Songbird.
More to come. :)

you're right that it's not open, you're right that it's closed. would be better to be open like songbird for sure.
fwiw, i only have apple playback devices at the moment, so it's not a burning need for me, but yes, open would be better.
