It's like imposing what to install without getting the approval from you. If there is then it is sitting dormant.
Now I just received an apple screen popup on my computer saying;

Apple software update version 2.1.1 1.99MB

With NO explanation of what this is, what it will do or better yet........
"WHY AM I RECEIVING IT WHEN I DIDN'T ASK FOR IT???"

Now currently on my right I am cleaning my laptop of the nastiest virus I have seen in years which made it in through all of my security software. And what happens on my desktop....I receive a popup right through all my security software that I didn't ask for and do not see any need for.

I now see the need for both more security (new software) and a new outlook of almost complete untrusting of any company that PUSHES software on us. I don't like this but you just can't afford to blindly trust software of any kind these days unless YOU GO AND ASK OR LOOK FOR IT.

Re: Apple Software Update

I totally agree here. i'm testing a webpage on a friend's computer here and since I've been on, I've had mcAffee ask me to update a subscription with two choices. Apple pushed Safari to millions of users, and this is wrong. People should have the choice of going onto their site and downloading it if they want it, and being a Mac user myself, I am sad to say that this isn't a new story. This has happened before, and Apple should really work on their user-friendliness, and by this I mean not ease of use with their software, but ease of use on their customers..

Re: Apple Software Update

Thank you for this article! You know, just getting a small notification that a new, more secure version of my software is available and asking me if I want to install it. Just being able to click OK because I can TRUST that the company is honourable enough not to install a new software, be it Safari or iTunes or Google Toolbar for that matter, that I did not ask for.
At least that's what I call trust...

But from what I've read in many of the comments here, and I have read them all, this would not be a trust issue. Why? Just because I have the option to review the updates and opt-out? Because I can just uncheck the box?

Sure, I agree that is giving the users a freedom of choice. But just by the act of forcing the users to review the updates the element of trust is broken. You don't need to review procedures you trust because you TRUST them. That's the whole point of trust. But surely, anyone on the web not reviewing what they download must be stupid, right?

I agree. There are far too many dangers on the web to click ok on anything you see. But this is not a matter of anything, this is a matter of a manually installed update manager from a respected company. I would love to be able to trust that company. I would love to be able to trust the update managers of ALL the major software companies.

And that's where I think John has a point. Forcing users to review even the updates from respected companies makes the update process a chore for some users. Not for all users, but at least for me and perhaps many more. And when users think it's a chore, some will stop using update managers. That leaves people with old and vulnerable software and that would be a problem for any software, but web browsers in particular.

I myself no longer use the ASU but Itry to keep QuickTime updated manually. It's a bigger chore, but a lot less annoying one. Too bad trust is a hard thing to earn. The world is a lot easier and a lot more efficent when you can trust someone.

Re: Apple Software Update

FIREFOX
I'm wondering how to get my Firefox working... The only reason I can see is from having installed an older version of Quicktime (didn't want the newer version where I'm forced, yes, forced) to DL iTunes with it. I just close 'em out without updating. Well, after reading all this, I tried to update Quicktime through the Player, and keep getting error messages telling me to restart Quicktime. Seeing how the only time I used Quicktime was to view an HD Nasa video, my solution is to uninstall Quicktime. It's worthless compared to Winamp, anyway. Maybe those annoying pop-ups will cease.

Re: Apple Software Update

Hey Even when i unchecked it not to install safari, it still did and thanks a lot my friend

Re: Apple Software Update

Hey Even when i unchecked it not to install safari, it still did. Apple trying to seed their browser by default. Or the CEO of Mozilla trying to dis-credit Safari and Apple's practices. If Apple was seeding something other than a browser. Would you even care? This is like the W.O.P.R. in War Games and you're still playing the browser wars. The once great big world, just got smaller because the internet fits in your pocket. Fact is, if you have an iPod, you need Safari to browse the internet and do cool things. It's a simple update. Geez... Would you feel better if Safari was not called Safari and bundle with iTunes by default? The only distrusting information I should be worried about are the comments posted here about Apple.

Re: Apple Software Update

Errr, better link:
http://img210.imageshack.us...

Re: Apple Software Update

Now we know the truth about the Mac/PC "Stuffed" ad:
http://img210.imageshack.us...

Re: Apple Software Update

(literally the next page I stumbled across whilst cross-checking what is installed on my PC.Case in point...

http://msmvps.com/blogs/alu...

* BTW REVO UNINSTALLER, is excellent for removing 'hard to remove soft' and is also FREE.
